Lithium Golf Cart Range Dropped After a Season? Check This – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A resort’s carts on LiFePO4 used to finish a full day comfortably. After their first season, some return with low charge or stop before the end of the day.

Main answer

Not necessarily. A healthy LiFePO4 pack loses capacity gradually. Redway’s 48V 100Ah OEM pack, for example, is rated at more than 8000 cycles at 60% DOD, so a noticeable drop after one season usually has another cause: cold weather, a charger that stops short, a state-of-charge meter that has drifted, changes in tire pressure or load, overnight drain, or cell imbalance. Test the battery’s delivered capacity before you conclude it’s worn.

Check in this order

  1. Temperature: range is lower in cold weather. Check whether the drop matches the season.
  2. Charging: confirm the charger completes and that its output matches the pack’s specified charge voltage. Check plugs and outlets for intermittent faults.
  3. Meter drift: a state-of-charge display that counts current can drift if the pack is rarely charged to full. Do a complete charge, let the pack rest, and resync.
  4. Vehicle load: check tire pressure, brake drag, added accessories, passenger load and route changes.
  5. Parasitic drain: look for accessories or controllers drawing current while parked.
  6. Cell balance: if the pack has an app, compare cell voltages at full and near empty.

Confirm with a measured test

Charge to full, drive a representative route until the pack reaches a defined low state of charge, and record the Ah delivered (from the app or a shunt) and the distance. Compare carts on the same route. If one cart’s pack delivers clearly fewer Ah than its siblings, that pack needs supplier diagnosis. If every cart dropped together, look at the route, the season or the charging infrastructure.

Conditions

Packs with Bluetooth or an SOC display make this much easier. Redway lists Bluetooth, WiFi, app and LCD as options on its 48V 100Ah OEM golf cart pack. Its pack datasheets list operation from -20°C to 65°C. Capacity still falls in the cold.

Risk limits

Don’t discharge to BMS cut-off repeatedly to “test” range. Stop at a defined low state of charge. Don’t change charger settings beyond the datasheet. For background, see Golf Cart Batteries and Capacity & Runtime.

Additional perspectives

Fleet operations perspective

Rotate carts across routes before blaming batteries. One cart that is always short of range on the same hilly loop may simply be doing more work. Keep a basic log per cart: charge start and end time, state of charge returned, route. A season of that data shows whether range loss follows the cart, the route or the charger.

Maintenance perspective

Make a full charge part of routine care, for example weekly, if your carts are often topped up only partly. It resyncs current-counting meters and gives the BMS time to balance. Check charger connectors and cables, because a worn plug that interrupts charging looks just like a weak battery.

Procurement perspective

If you’re sizing replacement or additional packs, base capacity on logged Ah per day plus a seasonal margin, not on the original brochure range. Redway offers 48V golf cart packs from 50Ah to 160Ah. Larger capacity reduces depth of discharge per day, but check the cart’s weight and space limits.
