Will a 100Ah Battery Run a 2000W Inverter?

A 100Ah battery can run a 2000W inverter briefly. Calculate runtime, current draw, usable capacity, BMS limits, cabling and fuse requirements.

Will a 100Ah Battery Run a 2000W Inverter?

A 100Ah battery can power a 2000W inverter, but a single 12V 100Ah battery is normally suitable only for short operation near the full 2000W load. At 90% inverter efficiency, the DC current is about 185A and the mathematical runtime is roughly 16 to 32 minutes depending on usable battery capacity.

Will a 100Ah battery run a 2000W inverter?

Yes, if the battery, battery-management system, cables, fuse and inverter can continuously support the required DC current. The inverter’s 2000W rating does not mean it always consumes 2000W; runtime depends on the actual connected load.

A 12V 100Ah battery contains approximately 1,200Wh of nominal energy because watt-hours equal volts multiplied by amp-hours. This conversion is also explained in Renogy’s amp-hour and watt-hour guide.

How is runtime calculated?

Use this planning formula: runtime in hours equals battery voltage multiplied by amp-hours, multiplied by the usable-capacity fraction and inverter efficiency, divided by the AC load in watts.

12V 100Ah assumptionUsable energy after 90% inverter efficiencyRuntime at a 2000W load
100% of nominal capacity1,080Wh0.54 hours, about 32 minutes
80% usable capacity864Wh0.432 hours, about 26 minutes
50% usable capacity540Wh0.27 hours, about 16 minutes

These are planning calculations, not guaranteed runtimes. Battery voltage sag, temperature, battery age, cable loss, inverter standby consumption and low-voltage cutoff can shorten operation. For more runtime examples, see How Long Will a 100Ah Battery Last?

How much DC current does a 2000W load require?

At 90% efficiency, a 2000W AC load requires about 2,222W from the battery. That equals approximately 185A at 12V, 93A at 24V and 46A at 48V. A 24V battery system therefore carries about half the current of a 12V system at the same power.

The battery’s continuous-discharge rating or BMS limit must exceed the expected current with appropriate design margin. The inverter can also demand a higher surge current when starting motors, compressors or pumps. Victron’s battery-capacity guidance likewise starts from load power, operating time, system voltage and inverter losses.

What must be checked before connecting the inverter?

  • The battery or BMS continuous and surge-current ratings.
  • The inverter’s continuous and surge ratings for the actual appliance.
  • The manufacturer-specified cable size, cable length, fuse and disconnect.
  • Terminal torque, ventilation and protection against short circuits.
  • The allowable depth of discharge for the battery chemistry.

A 2000W inverter on a 12V bank is a high-current installation. Follow the inverter and battery manuals and use a qualified installer when the cable, fuse or grounding requirements are uncertain.

When should you use a larger battery bank?

Use more capacity when the load must operate for longer than a brief interval, when the battery cannot supply approximately 185A continuously, or when voltage sag causes early inverter shutdown. For sustained operation, calculate the required watt-hours from the real load and target runtime before choosing the bank.

FAQ

How long will a 12V 100Ah battery run a 2000W load?

At 90% inverter efficiency, the mathematical maximum is about 32 minutes at full nominal capacity. A planning estimate is about 26 minutes at 80% usable capacity or 16 minutes at 50% usable capacity.

How many amps does a 2000W inverter draw from a 12V battery?

At a 2000W AC load and 90% efficiency, the DC input is about 2,222W, or approximately 185A at 12V. Cable losses and other loads can increase the demand.

Will every 100Ah lithium battery run a 2000W inverter?

No. The battery BMS must support the required continuous and surge current, and the cabling, fuse, terminals and inverter must also be rated for the load.

Would a 24V battery system reduce current?

Yes. At the same 2000W load and 90% efficiency, a 24V bank draws about 93A instead of about 185A from a 12V bank.
