BMS Settings on a Lithium Forklift: Who May Change Them? – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A fleet’s technicians have laptop access to the BMS on their lithium forklift packs. Operators complain that trucks slow down near the end of a shift, and a technician suggests lowering the cut-off voltage. The maintenance manager asks who is allowed to change BMS settings and what it means for the warranty.

Main answer

Treat BMS settings as the supplier’s safety and warranty limits. Cut-offs, current limits and temperature limits protect the cells, so changes should be made by the supplier or with its written approval. Unapproved changes may affect warranty and support; check your warranty terms. If trucks slow down too early, record the data and ask the supplier to review the settings against your truck controller rather than changing them on site.

Settings that should stay with the supplier

  1. Voltage cut-offs. Low and high limits that protect cells from over-discharge and overcharge.
  2. Current limits. Discharge and charge current, including peaks.
  3. Temperature limits. When charging or discharging is reduced or stopped.
  4. Balancing and SOC calibration. How the pack balances cells and reports charge.

A safe change process

  1. Record the symptom, truck model, controller settings and BMS data.
  2. Send it to the supplier and ask for a review.
  3. Get any change in writing, with the version and the reason.
  4. Apply it on one truck first and check the result.
  5. Keep a log of settings by pack serial.

Common root causes

Early slowdown often comes from a mismatch between the truck controller’s low-voltage cut-out and the BMS window, not from a wrong BMS setting; see our cut-off alignment article and our display reading article. Our CAN bus article covers communication.

Redway’s forklift specification tables show 5 years, which is the design life of the pack; the after-sales technical support period is 3 years. Redway’s BMS and telematics page gives background.

Risk limits

Changing protection settings without approval can create safety hazards. Follow the supplier’s instructions and your warranty terms. This article is general guidance for maintenance teams.

Additional perspectives

Maintenance manager perspective

Limit BMS access to named people, and log every connection. It protects the fleet and the warranty.

Service technician perspective

Send the supplier a data log from the slow truck. It usually shows the cause faster than trying settings.

Supplier engineer perspective

We can often solve early slowdown on the controller side. Tell us the truck model and its settings first.
