36V or 48V Lithium for a New Golf Cart Platform – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A vehicle maker is planning its next golf cart platform. Older models use 36V, but many customers ask for 48V lithium. The engineering team wants to understand what the voltage choice changes in the controller, motor and battery.

Main answer

For a new platform, 48V is the more common choice today because it delivers the same power at lower current than 36V, which helps hills, heavier loads and cable size, and it has wide controller, motor and charger support. 36V can still suit light, flat-course carts where cost and existing parts matter. Choose from the power and range you need, then check component availability. Redway lists both 36V and 48V lithium golf cart packs.

What the voltage changes

  1. Current. At the same power, 48V draws about a quarter less current than 36V, so cables, contactors and connectors run cooler.
  2. Performance. Higher voltage helps on hills and with heavier loads, depending on the motor and controller.
  3. Components. Controllers, motors, DC-DC converters and chargers are widely available at 48V.
  4. Range. Range depends on energy in kWh, so compare packs by kWh, not only by amp-hours.

When 36V still makes sense

Light carts on flat courses, low-cost models, or a platform that must share parts with an existing 36V range. Our fleet sizing article shows how to work out the energy you need.

Steps for the platform team

  1. Define top speed, gradient, payload and range targets.
  2. Estimate peak and continuous current at each voltage.
  3. Check motor, controller and charger options at both voltages.
  4. Ask the battery supplier for pack proposals with dimensions and BMS limits; see our cart platform article.

Redway’s sizing, voltage and range page gives background. Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model. OEM custom orders have no MOQ by default (1 piece), although some specific products carry a 10-piece minimum, so confirm for your model.

Risk limits

These are general considerations; your motor, controller and duty cycle decide. Confirm pack specifications for your project at quotation. This article is general guidance for vehicle makers.

Additional perspectives

Platform engineer perspective

Run the hill case first. The steepest gradient at full load sets the peak current, and that often decides the voltage.

Product manager perspective

Look at what dealers and fleets already stock. A voltage that matches their chargers and spare parts makes the new model easier to sell.

Battery engineer perspective

Give us the space envelope early. The same energy at 48V needs a different cell layout, and the layout drives weight and cost.
