A golf course is ordering lithium packs for its 60-cart fleet. Some carts do two 18-hole rounds a day on a hilly course, with lights and a cooler on board. The fleet manager wants to choose between a 100Ah and a 150Ah 48V pack without guessing.
Measure energy per round on your own course, then size for the busiest day plus a reserve. Battery energy is voltage times capacity: Redway’s 48V 100Ah pack is 51.2V and 105Ah, about 5.37 kWh, and the 48V 150Ah pack is listed at 7.2 kWh. Divide usable energy by measured kWh per round to find rounds per charge, and leave a margin for ageing, cold days and hills.
The method
- Measure. On five to ten carts, record kWh used per round from the charger or Ah from the BMS app. Include your hilliest holes and carts with accessories.
- Find the busiest day. Multiply kWh per round by the highest number of rounds a cart does between charges.
- Add a reserve. Plan to use only part of the rated energy, so that cold mornings, older packs and heavy players do not leave carts stranded.
- Compare packs. Divide planned usable energy by daily need for each option.
A worked example (illustrative figures)
Suppose your measurements show 2 kWh per 18-hole round on the hilly course, and carts do two rounds before charging: 4 kWh per day. With an 80% planning limit, a 5.37 kWh pack gives about 4.3 kWh, which is just enough with little margin. A 7.2 kWh pack gives about 5.8 kWh and leaves room for a third round or ageing. Your own figures will differ, which is why step 1 matters.
Other factors
Check the BMS current against the controller, especially on hills; Redway offers 48V 100Ah packs with 200A, 250A and 315A BMS ratings. Check weight and the battery bay. Midday top-up charging can reduce the capacity you need. Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model. See Redway’s fleet battery page and sizing and range page.
Charging plan
Check charger power and charging time against the gap between the last round and the first round next day. A larger pack needs more energy overnight. If carts also charge at lunchtime, make sure enough sockets are available near the cart barn so that every cart can plug in.
Risk limits
The example uses assumed figures to show the method; it is not a measured consumption value. Range depends on terrain, load, speed, tyres and temperature. Confirm pack specifications and fit with Redway before ordering.
Additional perspectives
Measure in the busiest month, not on a quiet weekday. The carts that run out of charge are always the ones doing extra rounds on a tournament day.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Course operations manager perspective
Group carts by duty: hilly routes, accessories and rental use. Two pack sizes matched to two groups often cost less than one large pack for every cart.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Fleet engineer perspective
Ask for quotes on both capacities with the same BMS, charger and warranty terms. Then the price difference reflects only the capacity you are buying.
