What a Burn-In Test Should Show Before a Pack Ships – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A buyer’s quality engineer is told that every forklift pack goes through a burn-in test before shipment. She wants to know what such a test should record, and how to tell a real record from a statement on a brochure.

Main answer

A burn-in or aging test runs the finished pack under controlled charge and discharge so that early faults show before shipment. A useful record shows the pack serial number, the date, the readings taken (voltage, current, temperature, capacity), any BMS alarms, and a clear pass or fail against limits the factory has written down. Redway runs a burn-in test before shipment; ask for the record for your serial numbers and for the pass criteria used.

What the record should contain

  1. Identity. Pack serial number, model, BMS version and test station.
  2. Conditions. Charge and discharge current, voltage limits and ambient conditions, as defined in the factory’s procedure.
  3. Readings. Pack voltage, cell voltages or spread, temperature points, and delivered capacity.
  4. Events. Any BMS alarm, protection trip or communication fault during the test.
  5. Result. Pass or fail, the name or ID of the operator, and the rework or retest note if it failed first time.

What counts as a pass

Pass limits are set by the factory and the customer’s specification, for example a capacity band, a maximum cell spread and no protection events. Ask what the limits are and whether you may agree stricter ones for your order. The test does not predict field life, but it helps catch weak cells, loose joints and BMS faults early. Our audit checklist and traceability article show how to check the records against the physical pack.

Redway’s quality management page and manufacturing quality control page describe its quality control before shipment.

Using the results

Keep each pack’s burn-in record with its serial number, so any later question can be traced to the original results. Treat a repeat drift or alarm during burn-in as a reason to hold the pack, not to ship and watch. Ask the supplier how failed packs are handled, and whether the results can be shared with your quality team.

Risk limits

A burn-in record is only as good as the person filling it in, so check a few serial numbers against the physical packs during a visit. This article is general guidance for buyers; test methods and limits vary by factory and model.

Additional perspectives

Quality engineer perspective

Request the burn-in records for three serial numbers of your choosing and compare dates with the production and shipping dates. Consistent timing is a sign the test is part of the normal flow.

Procurement perspective

Write the burn-in requirement into the purchase specification, including the records to be supplied with the shipment. A short, clear clause avoids later arguments about what was tested.

Service manager perspective

Ask that the record be kept for the support period. When a pack fails early in the field, the burn-in record is the first thing a supplier should be able to show you.
