A distributor’s QA manager is told by a golf cart battery supplier that the factory is ISO 9001 certified. Before approving the supplier, the manager wants to confirm that the certificate covers the site and the product line being bought.
ISO 9001 certifies a quality management system, not a product. Read the certificate’s scope statement: it names the organisation, the sites and the activities covered, such as design and manufacture of lithium battery packs. Check that the site making your golf cart batteries is listed, that the certificate is valid, and who issued it. Then ask for records that show the system working, such as inspection and corrective action records.
What to read on the certificate
- Organisation and sites. Is the factory that builds your packs listed?
- Scope statement. Which activities and product types are covered, for example design, production or only assembly.
- Validity. Issue and expiry dates, and whether surveillance audits are current.
- Issuer. The certification body and its accreditation, which you can check with the body directly.
What it does not tell you
ISO 9001 does not certify that a battery model meets a safety standard. Product testing is shown by separate test reports; see our documents article and our outgoing QC article.
Records to ask for
- Incoming inspection records for cells and parts; see our incoming inspection article.
- In-process and final test records by serial.
- Corrective action reports and how they were closed.
- Traceability from pack serial to cell batch; see our traceability article.
The factory operates under ISO 9001/14001 management systems, and the certificate is available on request. Redway holds relevant qualifications and certifications for its batteries; details are available from sales on request. Redway’s quality management page gives background.
Risk limits
This article is general guidance for QA teams. Verify certificate details with the issuing body, and audit the site if the order justifies it.
Additional perspectives
Ask for the certificate and the scope page together. The scope often answers the question the cover page raises.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – QA manager perspective
Pick one shipped pack serial and ask to trace it. Ten minutes of records says more than a certificate.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Auditor perspective
Put the document request in the supplier questionnaire, so every supplier answers the same way.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Procurement perspective
Specifications are taken from Redway product pages as of October 2026. Where a figure isn’t published, this article says so. Confirm current specifications for your model with Redway before ordering. This article is general guidance, not a site-specific engineering assessment.
