A club with a large rental fleet must decide whether its next battery purchase should be lithium or lead-acid. The finance manager asks for a cost model, and the fleet manager needs to know which inputs to collect.
Compare total cost over the same period, not purchase price. Collect the purchase cost of each option, how often each must be replaced, labour for watering and maintenance, charging energy, downtime and lost rentals, and any residual value. Lithium usually costs more at purchase but needs no watering and lasts more cycles; Redway’s golf cart packs list about 4000 cycles. Use your own fleet data wherever possible, and test the result with a few sensitivity cases.
Inputs to collect
- Purchase cost. Packs, chargers, installation and any kit parts, from current quotes.
- Replacement interval. How many years each option lasts at your rounds per day; lead-acid often needs earlier replacement.
- Maintenance labour. Watering, cleaning terminals and equalising for lead-acid, against simple checks for lithium.
- Charging energy. Energy drawn per round or per day, from meters if possible.
- Downtime. Carts out of service and lost rentals because of flat or failed batteries.
- Weight effects. A lighter pack may reduce wear and turf impact.
- End of life. Disposal costs and any residual value.
Building the model
Use a period that covers at least one full lithium life, add costs year by year, and compare totals. Run sensitivity cases with higher and lower usage and energy prices. Our forklift TCO article uses the same structure, and our replacement cycle article helps with timing.
Support and warranty
Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model. Include warranty terms in the model, because they affect the risk of early replacement. Redway’s lithium vs lead-acid page gives background.
Risk limits
Results depend on your usage, energy prices, labour costs and climate. Do not rely on general savings figures. Prices change, so use current quotes. This article is general guidance for fleet and finance teams.
Additional perspectives
Ask for the model in a simple spreadsheet with every input visible. A model that the board can check is more convincing than a single payback figure.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Finance manager perspective
Count lost rentals from flat carts. They are often the largest hidden cost of lead-acid in a busy season.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Fleet manager perspective
Get quotes on the same basis: pack, charger, delivery and warranty. Comparing a pack-only price with a full kit price skews the model.

Specifications are taken from Redway product pages as of October 2026. Where a figure isn’t published, this article says so. Confirm current specifications for your model with Redway before ordering. This article is general guidance, not a site-specific engineering assessment.
