A vehicle maker is launching a new golf cart with a fixed battery bay under the seat. The standard packs on the market do not quite fit, and the engineering lead wants to brief a battery factory properly so the first sample is close to right.
Send one brief with the bay drawing, the electrical limits and the interfaces. Include bay dimensions and clearances, mounting points, terminal position and cable routing, nominal voltage and capacity, the controller’s continuous and peak current, the communication needed by the display, the charger, and the temperature range. For reference, Redway’s 48V 100Ah pack measures 500 x 355 x 247 mm and weighs 43.2 kg; the 315A version is 565 x 330 x 255 mm and 46.8 kg.
What the brief should contain
- Bay drawing. Internal dimensions, clearances, mounting points, drain holes and the direction the pack is installed.
- Terminals and cables. Terminal side and height, cable lengths, lug sizes and the main fuse or breaker.
- Electrical limits. Voltage, capacity, controller continuous and peak current with duration, and regen behaviour.
- Communication and display. RS485, CAN-bus, Bluetooth or an LCD, and the SOC signal the dash needs. Redway lists these and options such as 4G, GPS and self-heating on its golf cart pages.
- Charger. On-board or off-board, charge current and connector.
- Environment. Operating and storage temperature, water exposure and vibration on your vehicle.
- Branding. Silkscreen, label, laser logo and manual; see our branding article.
From brief to sample
Ask the factory to reply with a drawing and a list of deviations from your brief before building the sample. OEM custom orders have no MOQ by default (1 piece), although some specific products carry a 10-piece minimum, so confirm for your model. Test the sample on the vehicle on hills, in rain and with a full load, and log BMS data. Our pilot order article lists what to approve next. Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model.
Redway’s OEM services page and installation and wiring page give more detail. Redway’s packs are designed and tested to UL-related standards; the test report is typically issued in the customer’s name, and the scope is confirmed at quotation. Ask for a report under your own company name.
Keeping the design stable
Once the pack is approved, agree written change control: any change to cells, BMS firmware, case or connector needs your approval and a new revision. Ask for the revision on each pack’s label. Stable revisions make service and spare packs much simpler over the vehicle’s life.
Risk limits
A pack that fits mechanically can still fail electrically, so do not approve on fit alone. Dimensions and weights above are from Redway product pages as of October 2026; confirm the drawing for your project with Redway.
Additional perspectives
Send a 3D model of the bay as well as a drawing. Cable routing problems show up much earlier in 3D, before anything is built.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Vehicle engineer perspective
Give the controller’s peak current and how long it lasts on your steepest grade. That single figure drives the BMS choice more than anything else in the brief.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Battery engineer perspective
Freeze the bay design before ordering the sample. A bay change after the sample usually means a new drawing and a second sample.
