Our solar battery’s state of charge drops from about 30% to 0% within minutes. Is the battery failing?

Solar Battery SOC Drops From 30% to 0%: Fault or Calibration? – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A home with a hybrid inverter and a 51.2V LiFePO4 rack battery usually charges to around 80–90%. In the evenings the displayed state of charge falls normally to about 30%, then drops to 0% within minutes and the inverter switches to grid.

Main answer

Often it’s the state-of-charge estimate rather than the cells. Most BMS units count current in and out and only reset to an accurate 100% at a confirmed full charge. If the battery rarely reaches full, the estimate drifts, and the cells reach their low-voltage limit while the display still shows a margin. Cell imbalance makes this worse. Confirm with a full charge and cell data before treating it as battery failure.

Why the estimate drifts

LiFePO4 voltage is flat in the middle of its range, so the BMS can’t correct the count from voltage until near full or near empty. Small counting errors add up over partial cycles. When the lowest cell reaches its cut-off, the BMS reports empty, even if the count still showed 30%.

Steps to tell drift from a fault

  1. Full charge: let the system complete a full charge to the datasheet maximum (58.4V on Redway’s PM-LV51200-5U and PM-LV51150-4U) until current tapers off. The BMS should reset to 100%.
  2. Cell data: on the battery LCD (listed on these modules), the app or inverter BMS data, check the highest and lowest cell voltages at full and near the low end.
  3. Repeat: discharge normally and see whether the sudden drop still happens after the reset.
  4. Communication: confirm the inverter is reading state of charge from the BMS over CAN or RS485, not estimating it from voltage.

Interpreting the result

  • Drop goes away after full charges: calibration drift. Schedule regular full charges.
  • Drop continues and one cell is always lowest: possible imbalance or weak cell. Log it and contact the supplier.
  • Drop happens only under heavy load: check discharge current against the module rating (100A continuous on these models) and the cable connections.

Risk limits

Keep a backup reserve in the inverter settings so outages don’t find the battery at cut-off. Don’t lower BMS cut-offs below the datasheet (40V on these modules) to win back displayed capacity. More detail in battery–inverter compatibility and Solar Batteries.

Additional perspectives

System design perspective

If the inverter is set to stop charging below 100% to extend life, add a periodic full charge, for example weekly or monthly, if the battery manufacturer allows it. That gives the BMS a reference point. Size the backup reserve with drift in mind rather than treating displayed 0–100% as exact.

Maintenance perspective

Keep a simple record: date of last confirmed full charge, highest and lowest cell voltage at full, and the state of charge at which drops occur. If the ‘drop point’ climbs over months, from 25% to 30% to 37% for example, that trend is worth sending to the supplier with the module serial numbers.

Procurement perspective

For multi-module systems, ask the supplier how the BMS aggregates state of charge across parallel modules and whether firmware updates are available. Communication and monitoring options (SNMP, WiFi, 4G on some Redway modules) make remote diagnosis possible. Specify them up front if the site is remote.
