Stored Golf Cart Lithium Pack Will Not Wake: What to Check – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A golf course brings its carts out of winter storage. Most start normally, but four lithium packs show no voltage at the terminals and the chargers will not start. The fleet technician wants a safe order of checks before asking the supplier for help.

Main answer

Work from simple to complex: check the power switch, breaker and connections, make sure the pack is above 0 degrees C, then try the supplier’s approved wake-up method, which usually means connecting the approved lithium charger. If the pack still shows nothing, stop and contact the supplier with the serial number and storage details. Do not bypass the BMS, jump the pack from another battery or force a charge.

The recovery order

  1. Look. Check for damage, swelling, smell or moisture. If you find any, stop and quarantine the pack.
  2. Switch and breaker. Redway’s golf cart packs have a power switch; options include a circuit breaker. Make sure both are on.
  3. Connections. Check terminals and the main fuse, and measure voltage at the pack terminals, not only at the controller.
  4. Temperature. Charging is specified from 0 degrees C. Bring a cold pack into a warm area and let it rest before charging.
  5. Wake-up. Many BMS designs sleep or open the output after deep discharge. Use the approved lithium charger or the supplier’s wake-up procedure, and confirm that procedure for your model in writing.
  6. Escalate. If the pack does not respond, send the supplier the serial number, storage dates, storage temperature, state of charge before storage and photos.

What not to do

  • Do not connect a lead-acid charger in a “force” or recovery mode.
  • Do not jump the pack from another battery or open the case.
  • Do not keep retrying a charger that faults; record the error instead.

Preventing it next winter

Redway’s pages list a self-discharge of about 3% per month and storage temperatures of minus 20 to 45 degrees C for one month and 0 to 35 degrees C for one year. Store packs at a partial charge, switched off, and check and top up during long storage as the supplier recommends. See Redway’s storage and winter care page and temperature and storage page. Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model.

Recording the case

Keep a short log for each pack that did not wake: what you checked, readings, the steps taken and the result. Over several seasons, the log shows whether the problem is storage practice, a charger setting or a particular batch, and helps the supplier support you.

Risk limits

A pack that has been deeply discharged may need supplier assessment before use. Do not put a pack back into service if it shows damage or heat. This is general guidance; wake-up steps differ by BMS, so confirm them with Redway.

Additional perspectives

Fleet technician perspective

Label each stored pack with its state of charge and date when it goes into storage. In spring, the label tells you at once which packs to check first.

Course manager perspective

Put a storage check in the winter calendar, for example once a month. A short check prevents most no-wake cases.

Supplier support engineer perspective

Send the storage history with the first message: dates, temperature and charge level. With that, the cause is usually clear without a second round of questions.
