A 48V lithium forklift pack in a three-truck cell has started showing a cell-imbalance warning on its display after the evening charge. The truck still runs, but the maintenance lead wants to know which steps the site can take and when the factory must be involved.
Record first, then test, then escalate. Save the alarm history and cell voltages, check temperature and charging, and run one supervised full charge with a rest period to let the BMS balance. If the spread stays above the supplier’s limit, grows from charge to charge, or comes with heat, swelling or a protection trip, stop using the pack and escalate to the factory with the data.
Steps for the site
- Record. Export or photograph the alarm history, highest and lowest cell voltage, cell temperatures, SOC and cycle count. Redway’s forklift BMS monitors cell voltage and cell temperature, with RS485, CAN-bus and, on several models, 4G cloud monitoring.
- Look and feel. Check for damage, heat, smell or loose connections. If you find any, stop here and quarantine the pack.
- Check charging. Confirm the charger is the approved model and profile, and that charging was not interrupted by breaks or a power cut.
- Supervised full charge. Charge to full with the approved charger and let the pack rest. Many BMS designs balance near the top of charge, so a pack that is always opportunity charged may rarely balance.
- Compare. Read the cell voltages again at rest. A spread that has narrowed is a good sign; one that has grown is not.
When it belongs to the factory
Escalate when the spread exceeds the supplier’s limit after a full charge, returns within days, affects one cell group repeatedly, or comes with a protection event. Send the data from step 1, before and after readings, and the pack serial number. Redway’s forklift specification tables show 5 years, which is the design life of the pack; the after-sales technical support period is 3 years.

Preventing repeat alarms
Review the charging routine: packs that are only ever topped up during breaks may need a scheduled full charge. Check that chargers are not shared between packs of different sizes. Keep the trend of cell spread for each pack, so that you can tell a one-off event from a slow change.
Risk limits
Do not open the pack, charge individual cells, or change BMS settings without the supplier’s written approval. Stop using any pack that is hot, swollen or smells, and follow your site emergency plan. This article is general guidance, not a repair procedure.
Additional perspectives
Add a weekly full charge for packs that are mostly opportunity charged, and log the cell spread after it. A trend over a month tells you more than a single reading.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Maintenance lead perspective
Ask the supplier for the balancing method, current and the voltage at which balancing starts. With those, you can tell whether the charging routine gives the BMS enough time to work.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – BMS engineer perspective
Agree in the service terms who decides when a pack is taken out of use and how quickly a replacement arrives. A clear rule avoids running a doubtful pack for weeks.

Specifications are taken from Redway product pages as of October 2026. Where a figure isn’t published, this article says so. Confirm current specifications for your model with Redway before ordering. This article is general guidance, not a site-specific engineering assessment.
