A distribution centre runs counterbalance trucks over two or three shifts. Lead-acid trucks need battery changes, and the fleet manager wants to know when a high-capacity 48V lithium pack, 500Ah or more, can run through the shifts with opportunity charging instead.
Start from energy, not amp-hours alone. Measure or estimate the energy each truck uses per shift, compare it with the pack’s usable energy, and look at the breaks available for opportunity charging. A 48V-class pack at around 600Ah stores roughly 30kWh of nominal energy (51.2V × 600Ah). If shift energy plus a reserve fits, and the charger can return enough energy in breaks within the pack’s limits, one pack per truck can often replace battery changes.
Checking whether it fits
- Shift energy. Log energy per shift on the hardest-working truck; see our shift energy article.
- Usable energy. Nominal kWh is voltage × amp-hours; keep a reserve rather than planning to empty the pack.
- Breaks. List breaks and shift changes where the truck can be plugged in.
- Charger power. Check that charger output in those breaks, within the pack’s charge limits, covers the gap.
- Weight and fit. A high-capacity pack must still suit the truck’s compartment and counterweight; see our counterweight article.
Charging in practice
Opportunity charging works best when chargers are placed where trucks naturally stop. Our opportunity charging article covers layouts, and our charger profile article explains pairing.
Redway’s high-capacity range
Redway lists 48V forklift packs in the 500Ah to 630Ah class. Packs list about 4000 cycles. Redway’s forklift specification tables show 5 years, which is the design life of the pack; the after-sales technical support period is 3 years. Redway’s high-capacity sizing page gives background.
Risk limits
Energy use varies with load, lift height, ramps and temperature, so measure on site. Confirm the pack and charger specification for your trucks at quotation. This article is general guidance for fleet planners.
Additional perspectives
Log a full week, including the busiest day. Sizing from an average day leaves trucks short at peak.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Fleet manager perspective
Check the site supply before ordering higher-power chargers. Several large chargers at shift change add up.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Electrical engineer perspective
Send us truck models, shift times and break lengths. We can propose a pack and charger pairing to test.

Specifications are taken from Redway product pages as of October 2026. Where a figure isn’t published, this article says so. Confirm current specifications for your model with Redway before ordering. This article is general guidance, not a site-specific engineering assessment.
