A logistics company will receive its first 30 lithium forklift packs next month. Operators and the maintenance team only know lead-acid routines such as watering and battery changes, and the site manager asks who needs training and what it should cover.
Train three groups differently. Operators need charging rules, the meaning of the display and alarms, and what to do when a truck stops. Technicians need BMS data reading, connector and cable checks, safe lifting and isolation, and the supplier’s fault procedure. Supervisors need the escalation path and records. In the US, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.178(l) already requires operator training that includes battery charging, so add lithium content to that programme.
What each group should learn
- Operators. When to plug in (opportunity charging is allowed for lithium), reading the state-of-charge display, what each alarm means, and what never to do: no watering, no opening the pack, no unapproved chargers.
- Technicians. How to read BMS data (for example SOC, cell voltages and temperatures over RS485, CAN or a 4G dashboard where fitted), how to check connectors, cables and torque, how to isolate and lift a pack, and how to collect logs for a claim.
- Supervisors. Who calls the supplier, what data to send, and how to quarantine a pack that shows damage or heat.
How to organise it
Ask the supplier for the user manual, a short fault guide and a training session before delivery. Redway’s pages mention installation, debugging and troubleshooting support; agree the format, such as video sessions or documents, at the order stage. Redway’s forklift specification tables show 5 years, which is the design life of the pack; the after-sales technical support period is 3 years. Plan internal refresher training for the years after that.
Keep a sign-off sheet per person. Redway’s forklift safety and training page covers the regulatory background, and our charging fault checklist can be used as a training exercise.
A first-week plan
Day one: train technicians on the first delivered packs. Day two: train operators by shift with a real truck. In the first week, a technician checks charging behaviour and alarm logs daily and records questions for the supplier. Close the week with a short review and update the site instructions.
Risk limits
Training does not replace the supplier’s manual or local law. Only trained and approved staff should handle packs, and nobody should open a pack or change BMS settings without the supplier’s written approval. This article is general guidance, not legal advice.
Additional perspectives
Run a one-hour session per shift with a real pack and charger, then a short written check. People remember the alarm screens better when they have seen them on the truck.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Training coordinator perspective
Give two technicians per site deeper training and access to BMS data, and make them the first contact for the supplier. A fixed point of contact makes remote support much faster.
Redway Tech Editorial Team – Maintenance lead perspective
Update the site risk assessment and emergency plan for lithium packs, including what to do if a pack is damaged in a collision. Keep training records with the asset file.

Specifications are taken from Redway product pages as of October 2026. Where a figure isn’t published, this article says so. Confirm current specifications for your model with Redway before ordering. This article is general guidance, not a site-specific engineering assessment.
