Our lithium golf cart shuts off going downhill right after a full charge. Is regenerative braking the cause?

Lithium Golf Cart Shuts Off Downhill After Full Charge – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A hilly course’s carts have regenerative braking. Straight after charging, a cart descending the first long hill loses power briefly. Later in the day it doesn’t happen.

Main answer

Regeneration is a likely cause. When the pack is full, there is little room to accept charge. Current from regenerative braking can push cell voltage or charge current past the BMS protection limits, and the BMS disconnects to protect the cells. Later in the day the pack has room, so the problem goes away. Confirm with BMS data, then deal with it through controller regen settings or charge-limit strategy agreed with the battery and cart suppliers.

Why it happens only when the pack is full

LiFePO4 voltage rises steeply near full charge. A full pack receiving regen current can quickly reach cell over-voltage, or exceed the allowed charge current, and either triggers protection. For example, Redway’s 48V 100Ah OEM pack lists JBD or DALY BMS options. Its public page doesn’t state a maximum regen or charge current, so ask the supplier for that figure for your model.

Steps to confirm

  1. Write down when it happens: state of charge, which hill, regen settings, whether it’s straight after charging.
  2. Read the BMS fault record or app after an event. Look for charge over-current or cell over-voltage rather than discharge faults.
  3. Check the controller’s regen current settings and any recent changes or firmware updates.
  4. Ask the battery supplier for the pack’s maximum continuous and peak charge current and its cell over-voltage threshold.

Ways to reduce it

  • Have a qualified technician lower or limit regen current at high state of charge, if the controller supports it.
  • If the supplier agrees, set the charger or route plan so carts don’t start long descents at 100%.
  • Choose a pack whose charge current rating covers the regen current.

Risk limits

Losing drive or regen braking on a slope is a safety issue. Make sure the mechanical brakes are serviceable, and don’t dispatch carts onto steep descents while the cause is unresolved. Don’t disable BMS protection or raise its limits. See Golf Cart Batteries and BMS & Safety.

Additional perspectives

Selection perspective

On hilly sites with regen, make the pack’s charge current rating, not just its discharge rating, a selection criterion. Give the supplier the controller’s regen settings. Redway’s public pages state discharge BMS ratings (200A, 250A, 315A options on 48V 100Ah) but not regen acceptance for every model. Get it confirmed for the version you order.

Fleet operations perspective

A simple operating rule can reduce events while a technical fix is arranged: send freshly charged carts on flat routes first. Record each event with cart ID and state of charge so the controller and battery suppliers can work from the same evidence.

Maintenance perspective

Inspect the mechanical brakes on any cart that has had a downhill cut-out. Riders may have braked hard. Recheck after controller setting changes, and keep a note of controller firmware and settings in the cart’s service record so a later change doesn’t reintroduce the problem.
