72V Lithium Golf Cart Packs: When Higher Voltage Makes Sense – Redway Tech Talk
Buyer question / scenario

A vehicle maker builds utility carts and sightseeing vehicles alongside standard golf carts. Customers with hilly sites and heavier loads ask for more power, and the team is considering a 72V platform for some models.

Main answer

A 72V platform makes sense when a vehicle needs more power than a 48V system can deliver at sensible current: heavier utility or sightseeing vehicles, steep sites, higher top speeds or towing. Higher voltage lowers current for the same power, easing cables and controllers. But 72V needs matching motors, controllers, chargers and DC-DC converters, and fewer parts are on the shelf than at 48V. Redway lists a 72V 100Ah lithium golf cart pack.

When 72V helps

  1. Heavier vehicles. Multi-seat sightseeing vehicles and loaded utility carts.
  2. Steep sites. Hills where 48V current would be very high.
  3. Higher speeds. Where local rules allow and the drive train is designed for it.
  4. Towing or heavy accessories. Trailers, tippers or other loads.

What to check

  1. Components. Motor, controller, charger and DC-DC converter options at 72V.
  2. Energy. Compare packs by kWh; a 72V pack of the same amp-hours stores more energy than a 48V one.
  3. Charging. Chargers must match the 72V pack; existing 48V chargers cannot be used.
  4. Service. Technicians need training and tools for the higher voltage.
  5. Parts and dealers. Fewer off-the-shelf parts than at 48V, so plan stock.

Our 36V or 48V article covers the lower voltages, and our sightseeing duty article shows how to size energy. Redway’s sizing, voltage and range page gives background.

Running a trial

Build one or two vehicles at 72V and run them on the hardest route, comparing current, temperature and range with a 48V version. Redway’s golf cart warranty is 3 years, and 5 years on the 48V 100Ah model. OEM custom orders have no MOQ by default (1 piece), although some specific products carry a 10-piece minimum, so confirm for your model.

Risk limits

Higher voltage brings extra safety and insulation needs, and road use may be regulated. Confirm specifications for your project at quotation and follow local rules. This article is general guidance for vehicle makers.

Additional perspectives

Vehicle engineer perspective

Check the controller range first. A good 72V controller with the features you need decides whether the platform is practical.

Product manager perspective

Offer 72V where customers clearly need it, not across the range. It adds parts and training, so keep it for the models that benefit.

Service lead perspective

Plan training before the first vehicles ship. Technicians used to 48V need to know the higher-voltage safety steps.
