Golf Cart Battery Installation, Charging & Maintenance

Converting a cart, wiring it correctly, charging it properly, and keeping the pack healthy.

Plan my conversion

The conversion is the easy part; the failures come from wiring, charger settings and storage. This page follows that order.

Wiring, trays and mounting

A lighter pack still has to be fixed in place.

Lithium packs are lighter and often smaller, so the original tray and hold-downs may not clamp them. Use the correct bracket or tray, and torque the terminals to spec — loose terminals are the second most common failure after wiring.

Charging: the settings decide the pack’s life

A lead-acid charger will ruin a lithium pack.

Use a lithium-profile charger, set absorption and float to the pack specification, and check whether the cart’s onboard charger is compatible. Opportunity charging between rounds is fine — the pack does not need to be cycled empty.

Maintenance, storage and lifespan

Less work than lead-acid, but not zero.

No watering, no equalising. What remains: keep terminals clean and tight, store at partial charge if the cart is idle for winter, and watch the BMS log for cell imbalance. Cold reduces available capacity but does not damage a healthy pack — leaving it flat for months does.

Street legality, speed and safety

LSV rules change the pack, not just the paperwork.

Carts registered as low-speed vehicles need a different speed and range profile, and the safety equipment comes with it. Check the local rule before specifying a high-speed pack.

Golf cart battery questions

The five that come up before every conversion.

What voltage battery does a golf cart use?

Most carts run 36V or 48V, with 72V on high-speed and lifted builds. The voltage is set by the controller; amp-hours are your choice, based on the rounds you play between charges.

How many amp-hours does a golf cart battery need?

A 48V 100Ah pack covers a normal day on most 48V carts. Lifted carts, hills and two rounds a day push that to 150Ah and above. Compare usable capacity with the lead-acid bank you are replacing.

Can I convert a golf cart to lithium without changing the motor?

Yes. The motor and controller usually stay. What changes is the charger (lithium profile) and sometimes the battery tray or bracket, because a lithium pack is lighter and smaller than the lead-acid bank.

How long does a lithium golf cart battery last?

Expect 3,000–6,000 cycles, or eight to ten years of normal use. Storage habits matter more than mileage: leaving the pack fully discharged for months is what shortens it most.

Is it legal to drive a golf cart on the street?

Only where local rules allow it, usually with LSV registration — lights, mirrors, restraints and a speed limit. Check the rule before specifying a high-speed pack.

Want the conversion checked before you buy?

Send the cart model and a photo of the battery bay, and we will confirm pack size, bracket and charger settings.
