Choosing a Forklift Battery

Voltage, capacity, weight and payback — the decision in the order buyers actually make it.

Talk to an engineer

A forklift battery is specified by the truck, not by the catalog: voltage, capacity and weight all follow the counterweight class and the shift pattern. This page walks the decision in the order a buyer actually makes it, and links to the articles that answer each step in detail.

Weight, size and the counterweight trade-off

A lighter lithium pack earns back payload — up to a point.

Lithium packs weigh roughly a third of the lead-acid block they replace. That is extra payload on most trucks, but on some models the counterweight assumes the original weight, so the battery bay needs a ballast or the truck has to be re-rated. Ask for the weight envelope before choosing a capacity.

Brand-specific fit and retrofit

Toyota, Hyster, Crown, Yale, Clark and Jungheinrich each have their own bay and connector conventions.

The mechanical fit decides whether a retrofit is a drop-in or a project: connector type, bay height, cable routing and the truck’s own battery-discharge curve all matter. The articles below cover the brands we build replacements for most often.

Cost, payback and where the savings come from

The payback is in charging labour and battery life, not only in the purchase price.

Lithium removes watering, equalising and the spare-battery swap, so the honest comparison is total cost per operating hour over eight to ten years. Use the pieces below to build that comparison for a specific fleet.

Still comparing applications

The same battery question changes with the warehouse type.

Cold storage, food handling, multi-shift distribution and port operations each push the specification in a different direction. The remaining articles below cover those cases.

Forklift battery questions

The five that come up in almost every fleet conversation.

What voltage battery does my forklift need?

It is fixed by the truck, not by preference: most warehouse trucks use 24V, 36V or 48V, and larger counterbalance or container-handling trucks use 80V. The pack voltage must match the truck controller exactly; capacity (Ah) is what you size to the shift.

Can I replace a lead-acid forklift battery with lithium without changing the truck?

Usually yes, but three things have to line up: the bay dimensions and connector, the weight envelope (lithium is roughly a third of the lead-acid weight, so some trucks need ballast), and the charger, which must be lithium-specific. Trucks that pass those checks are a drop-in replacement.

How long does a LiFePO4 forklift battery last?

Expect 3,000–6,000 charge cycles at 80% depth of discharge, which is typically eight to ten years in a single-shift operation. Heat, sustained partial charging with the wrong profile, and oversized fast charging are the three things that shorten it fastest.

Do lithium forklift batteries need opportunity charging?

Not in the lead-acid sense. Lithium tolerates partial charging, so you can top up during breaks instead of swapping packs — but the charger and BMS settings must support it, and the charging station has to sit on the truck route to be used.

What maintenance does a lithium forklift battery need?

No watering, no equalising, no specific-gravity checks. What remains is connector inspection, keeping the charging area ventilated, watching the BMS fault log, and checking heater or coolant function on cold-storage packs.

Need the specification checked?

Send the truck model, shift pattern and bay dimensions, and we will confirm the voltage, capacity and weight envelope in writing.
