What a BMS protects, balances and reports — and where its limits are.
Protection: over-voltage, current and temperature

Balancing, state of charge and monitoring
Balancing keeps the weakest cell group from ending the pack early; monitoring tells you when it starts.

Charging & BMS questions
The questions that come before an order.
What charger does a lithium battery need?
One with a lithium (LiFePO4) profile matching the pack voltage and BMS protocol. A lead-acid charger will overcharge the pack and the BMS will keep disconnecting it.
What is a BMS and do I need one?
A battery management system protects against over- and under-voltage, over-current and temperature extremes, and balances the cells. Every lithium pack needs one — the question is only how good it is.
Can I charge a lithium battery faster?
Up to the cell and BMS rating, yes. Fast charging is fine for LFP as long as temperature is managed and the charger respects the current limit the BMS advertises.
Why does my BMS cut off early?
Usually a cell imbalance, a temperature limit or a charger set above the pack voltage. Read the fault log before assuming the pack is failing.
What maintenance does a lithium pack need?
Very little: keep the terminals tight, the enclosure ventilated, and watch the BMS log. There is no watering and no equalising.
