A boat usually needs two different batteries: a deep-cycle bank for the trolling motor and house loads, and a starting battery for the engine. Choosing well means separating those jobs before comparing amp-hours.
Separate the jobs first
House, trolling and starting are three different duty cycles.
Trolling motors want sustained draw and tolerate deep discharge; engine starting wants short bursts of high current. A dual-purpose battery compromises on both, which is fine on a small boat and wrong on a boat with an electric motor and a fridge.

Voltage, amp-hours and real runtime
Work back from the motor’s amp draw, not from the shelf label.
Trolling motor runtime is amp-hours divided by actual draw at your speed setting, minus the margin you want to keep in reserve. Lithium’s flat discharge curve means the last hour feels like the first, which changes how much reserve matters.

Cost, brand and where to buy
Marine pricing varies more by distributor than by chemistry.
Compare usable amp-hours rather than nominal, then add the charger and any mounting changes. For a fleet, marina or reseller, factory-direct changes the arithmetic substantially.

Marine battery questions
The questions that come before an order.
Do I need a separate starting battery on a boat?
On anything with an engine and a trolling motor, yes. Starting needs short high-current bursts; the house and trolling loads want deep cycling. One dual-purpose battery is a compromise for small boats only.
How many amp-hours does a trolling motor need?
Divide the actual draw at your usual speed setting into the amp-hours you want available, then keep a reserve. Lithium delivers the full curve, so the last hour does not feel slower than the first.
Can I charge a lithium marine battery from the alternator?
With a lithium-aware regulator or a DC-DC charger, yes. A standard alternator regulator will overcharge and overheat the pack; this is the most common marine conversion mistake.
How do I store a marine battery over winter?
Charge to roughly half, disconnect the loads, and keep it above freezing where possible. Leaving a lithium pack at 0% for months is what shortens its life.
Is lithium safe on a boat?
With a BMS, correct fusing and sealed terminals it is the safer chemistry — no acid, no hydrogen during charging. The realistic risks are DC arc at the connection and mechanical damage, both managed by installation.
