Lithium removes the acid and the hydrogen, but it brings DC arc, thermal events and new paperwork. This page gathers the safety and compliance articles in the order a site engineer meets them.
What actually changed when the chemistry changed
Fewer chemical hazards, different electrical ones.
No watering, no specific gravity, no hydrogen evolution during charging — that part of the risk register disappears. What remains is the DC side: high-current connectors, arc flash during connect/disconnect, and the charger as a single point of failure. Ventilation still matters, but for heat rather than gas.

Handling, shipping and site rules
Transport and site compliance decide the timetable, not the battery.
Lithium packs travel under different rules from lead-acid, and warehouse policies often predate lithium entirely. The articles below cover shipping classification, on-site handling and the standards customers ask us to certify against.

Safety & compliance questions
The questions that come up before an order.
Does a lithium forklift battery need ventilation?
Yes, but for heat rather than gas. There is no hydrogen evolution and no acid mist, so the ventilation requirement is about keeping the charging area within the pack temperature band.
Is a lithium forklift battery a fire risk?
Less than the fuel and lead-acid hazards it replaces, but not zero. The realistic risks are DC arc at the connector, a charger fault, and mechanical damage to the pack. Correct fusing and the BMS handle the first two.
How are lithium forklift batteries shipped?
Under UN 38.3 as Class 9 dangerous goods, at a state of charge typically capped at 30%. We supply the test summary and the packing documentation with every shipment.
What certifications can you provide?
UN 38.3 transport test summary, IEC 62619 and CE documentation are standard; UL 2580 and site-specific standards are available on request. Tell us the destination country and the site rules.
Do operators need new training after a conversion?
Yes, a short one. The changes are the charging routine (opportunity charging instead of a pack swap), the connector handling, and what to do if the BMS reports a fault.
Need the compliance pack?
Tell us the destination country and the site rules, and we will send the test reports, certificates and handling instructions.
